The internet can be a useful tool and source of entertainment for the entire family. For kids in particular, the world wide web is a wonderful resource that can be used to play interactive games, communicate with peers and research school reports. Kids who are old enough to use a mouse and keyboard can literally have the world at their fingertips! Yet despite its extraordinary potential, the internet can pose hazards for children and adults alike. It's important to be aware of what your kids do and see online. Now is the time to teach your children about the dangers and benefits of being connected. Here are some helpful tips for keeping your kids safe when using the internet:

• Keep the computer in a central location where the screen is visible to everyone.
• Invite your children to show you their favourite websites as a way to positively monitor them.
• Learn about parental control software and don’t be afraid to use it!
• Maintain access to any account your child opens online and don’t be afraid to do a spot check!

Unmonitored internet usage may mean increased exposure to online predators and innapropriate content. Keep your children informed of danger signs with these tips:

• Never arrange to meet someone in person that you have met online
• Never upload or share personal files or photos with someone you don’t personally know
• Never give out personal information such as your home address, or phone number
• Always remember that what people tell you online may not always be the truth
